Bitcoin Payment Terms
How Bitcoin may be used to settle an approved CME invoice or proforma.
Document code: CME-BTC-2026-01
These Bitcoin Payment Terms apply only where CME has agreed in advance to accept Bitcoin as a way to settle CME's own invoice, proforma or other GBP payment request. They do not make Bitcoin available for every job.
1. Prior agreement only
Bitcoin payment is available only for approved work and only where CME confirms the arrangement for the specific invoice, proforma or payment request. CME may decline or withdraw a Bitcoin payment option where the instruction has expired, the payment request is no longer payable, payment details cannot be safely verified, or CME considers the arrangement inappropriate for that job.
2. GBP debt remains the source of truth
The underlying quotation, proforma, invoice, credit or refund remains denominated in GBP unless CME expressly agrees otherwise in writing. The Bitcoin amount is a settlement amount derived from the stated GBP amount and the rate confirmed for that instruction.
3. Payment instruction
A valid Bitcoin payment instruction should identify the original document, payment reference, GBP amount, Bitcoin amount, BTC/GBP rate, rate source or method, rate confirmation timestamp, expiry, Bitcoin network, destination address and any other payment checks stated on the instruction.
4. Rate, expiry and reissue
- The Bitcoin amount is payable only within the validity window shown on the instruction.
- If the instruction expires, the previous Bitcoin amount is no longer payable. CME may review the current rate and issue a fresh instruction, or may ask for payment by another available method.
- A market-rate feed, if used, is decision support for CME staff. It is not itself a customer-facing rate until CME confirms and issues an instruction.
5. Network, address and confirmations
- You are responsible for sending the exact amount to the exact destination address on the exact Bitcoin network stated in the current instruction.
- You are responsible for miner or network fees. The amount received by CME must match the payable amount after fees.
- CME may state required confirmations or verification steps in the instruction. If no confirmation count is stated, CME treats payment as pending until it can reasonably verify the transaction and reconcile it to the relevant payment request.
- Payments sent to the wrong network, wrong address, expired instruction or wrong amount may be delayed, irrecoverable or treated as unpaid unless CME can safely identify and recover them.
6. Underpayment, overpayment and duplicate payment
- If a Bitcoin payment is underpaid, CME may request the shortfall by Bitcoin or another payment method.
- If a Bitcoin payment is overpaid or duplicated, CME will review the position against the GBP amount due, network fees, transaction costs, identification checks and any legal or accounting constraints before deciding how to refund or credit the excess.
- Any refund or credit is calculated by reference to the GBP value of the original debt or credit, not later movement in the Bitcoin price.
7. Refund destination verification
If a Bitcoin refund is appropriate, CME may require reasonable checks before using any refund address. CME will not rely solely on an unsolicited email or message to change a Bitcoin refund destination.
8. Fraud and payment-redirection warning
CME will not rely solely on an unsolicited email, text, social-media message or other unexpected communication to change a Bitcoin payment destination. Customers should independently verify changed payment instructions using CME's established published contact details before sending funds.
9. Finality and network risk
Bitcoin transactions may be irreversible. Blockchain congestion, wallet errors, network delays, wrong-address payments, wrong-network payments and third-party wallet or exchange failures are outside CME's control.
10. No crypto service or advice
Accepting Bitcoin is a payment-settlement method only. CME does not provide crypto exchange, custody, brokerage, payment account, investment, tax, accounting or financial advice services. CME does not advise customers to buy Bitcoin, hold Bitcoin or use any exchange or wallet.
11. Records and tax/accounting
CME records Bitcoin settlement against the original GBP commercial document. Customers are responsible for their own wallet, exchange, tax and accounting records, and should take their own advice where needed.
